John Jenkinson (1799-1876) came from Hallaton, near Market Harborough, to Kettering as a poor boy and initially worked as a market gardener. He attended the Little Meeting in Gold Street (later Fuller Baptist Church) where he became an able preacher. In his twenties, he was one of a group which left Gold Street and formed their own chapel, Ebenezer, with Jenkinson as the minister.
In My Life, he tells the story of his ministry at Kettering and Oakham and the active part he played in the events of his time. In addition to being a preacher, a lecturer, journalist and pamphleteer. Jenkinson was one of the first Co-operators, a Temperance advocate, a noted opponent of the Church of England, a Chartist and political Radical. His autobiography and other writings that are included in this book give a vivid picture of local and national events as well as of Jenkinson's personality.
