Peterborough is the only city in the historic county of Northamptonshire. In 1541, its former Abbey became the Cathedral of a new diocese which still includes the whole of the county. John Speed's map (above) is of Peterborough in 1611.
The population of the area that is now Peterborough Unitary Authority increased from 13,522 in 1801 to 53,375 in 1911. Peterborough Development Corporation was launched in 1967 to promote extensive development of the city and neighbouring land, as a result of which the population of the urban area increased from 106,823 in 1971 to 215,683 in 2021.
