It appears from D K Shearing's thesis (see below) that over 180 schools operated in Northamptonshire for some or all of the time between 1688 and 1800. Amongst them were charity schools, which meant that even at that stage education was not necessarily limited to the children of parents who could afford to pay fees. Many more schools were established in the county at a later date.

- An Introduction to the English Tongue by Charles Marshall The author was vicar of Brixworth from 1779 to 1829. At least six editions of this book were published.
