Between 1695 and 1706, a tax was levied to pay for the war against France. Various sums were charged for births, marriages & burials and also from bachelors over 21 and widowers without children. To help work out how much each person had to pay, lists were compiled of those living in Rothwell Hundred.
The area includes 22 other places as well as Rothwell itself. The places are all set out at the end of this account.
We are grateful to Christine Vialls for transcribing the tax lists which date from 1697 and feature 4,732 local residents. Accompanied by a helpful introduction, they form a treasure trove for anyone interested in the history of the area or with ancestors nearby.
