This volume was conceived as a companion to The Accounts of Geoffrey of Crowland, Abbot of Peterborough 1299-1321. It comprises all the known thirteenth-century accounts relating to the Abbey, whether from its own archives or from those associated with the Crown.
The most important surviving accounts are those for 1292-3 held by the Rockingham Castle estate and a shorter series for 1279-80 belonging to the British Library.
Taken together, the thirteen-century accounts are less impressive than the early-fourteenth-century series, but they show how the accounting system evolved and provide the fullest possible picture of the Abbey’s finances at that date.
The introduction explains in detail the manuscripts involved and editorial approach adopted. Original Latin texts have already been published, so this book contains only their translations into English. The bibliography both lists the primary sources consulted and points to an array of books and articles likely to be helpful to readers who wish to investigate further. There is a substantial general index.
