Writing Northamptonshire's History:
the early VCH in the county

Professor John Beckett

5th May 2012

Conference Suite, Main Hall, St Andrew's Hospital, Billing Road, Northampton

The Victoria County History (VCH) was founded in 1899 and in a flurry of activity committees were formed and work commenced in almost all the English counties, Northamptonshire included. In this lecture, John Beckett looks at the start-up of the VCH Northamptonshire and the work undertaken towards the publication of volumes 1 and 2 before the First World War. The story continues in the 1930s when two further volumes were published, but no further work was undertaken until the recent revival in the 1990s.

Professor John Beckett is Professor of English Regional History at the University of Nottingham, and was for five years (2005-10) Director and General Editor of the VCH. During that time he contributed briefly to VCH Northamptonshire Volume VI, and was a regular visitor to the county to meet with the local VCH Trust. His most recent book is Writing Local History (2007).

This lecture followed the Annual General Meeting of the Society.
